Global Village Volunteer Teams

GV Volunteer

For this new project Habitat Kyrgyzstan has hospitably opened up its doors to a Global Village team to play an active part in the wonderful work that is taking place in Kyrgyzstan.

We hope, the information here will be useful for Global Village teams and various international volunteers as well, who have decided or who are deciding to come to Kyrgyzstan and help Habitat in eliminating poverty housing by building simple, decent and affordable homes for people in need.

Kyrgyzstan is a country where more than 60% of population are poor. Poverty housing is one of the biggest problems in Kyrgyzstan. Many families do not have a decent house and they can not afford to buy it. These people do need our help!

To give a needy family a house means to change their life, give a hope for the better future, make their children happier and healthier. We can help them by joining our efforts and donate, build or renovate a new house that a family will call "our home".

How a Global Village team work with us?

A group of around ten people has been invited to join in the building. (Please see the website of Global Village to know how to join it). The work at the site will be hard labour: laying foundations and pouring cement, scraping walls and ceilings, plastering and painting.

Besides the handwork that the team will be doing with local volunteers and homeowners, they will be given a chance to immerse into the Kyrgyz culture. A two or three -day horse-back riding tour, during which the team will stay in traditional nomadic tents (yurts), will bring them back to the roots of the Kyrgyz people. Important, if you realize that building together is just one goal of this Global Village Trip.

Learning to understand the pressure under which the Kyrgyz people have lived for decades and how they are currently trying to turn this history into something positive, is just as precious. This trip will mean another step in which participants will grow in their knowledge of the world, as well as better learn to understand their own spiritual identity.

A BIT OF HISTORY...

A big difference in lives of 76 Kyrgyz families have made Global Village teams and international individual volunteers who have been helping Habitat since 1999. The first Global Village team visited Kyrgyzstan in June, 2001. The team consisted of eleven people who were from Netherlands and the United States. Since that time HFH Kyrgyzstan has hosted ten Global Village teams, seven World Challenge Teams and more then 20 individual volunteers from USA, Canada, England, Greece, Australia, Germany, France, Holland and other countries.

It was a great experience for both volunteers and Habitat families. Through work and leisure we built the friendship, understanding and and creating warm relationships between local people and international volunteers. We really enjoyed the great time spent with each of them and it remains an unforgettable experience in our hearts and minds. We believe it was a blessing of God to have a chance to meet each of you and work with you, our dear Volunteers.

We all at Habitat Kyrgyzstan are sincerely grateful for your help and efforts to achieve our common goal to eliminate poverty housing in Kyrgyzstan!!! And we are always happy to greet new volunteers willing to come to us and help to our families. Welcome to Habitat Kyrgyzstan!
