"Bishkek is not New York," as one of Habitat's construction managers likes to remind foreign volunteers. A different environment means different health risks, and also a different availability of medications and healthcare. Kyrgyzstan in general is not a high-risk area in terms of infectious diseases, but it is critical that you have medical insurance that will cover you in Kyrgyzstan, especially since the work you will be doing here contains all the risks inherent to construction.  In addition, most volunteers engage in outdoor activities such as horseback riding and trekking during their stay in Kyrgyzstan, which further increases risk while abroad.

It is recommended that travellers to Kyrgyzstan are up-to-date on their vaccinations and are in good physical condition prior to arrival in Bishkek.

For online health recommendations for travellers to Kyrgyzstan, you can find useful information at                  MD Travel Health.com

Pharmacies ("Аптека")

There are pharmacies all over Bishkek, and locating one (or three) is seldom a problem. Most pharmacies stock basic drugs (e.g. painkillers, antihistamines, etc.) and medical equipment, but if you are looking for something more specific, you may be a bit hard pressed.  Keep in mind before leaving home that while many Western drugs or generic equivalents are available in Bishkek, this is not always the case, so if you require a specific medication from home, make sure you bring an adequate supply with you to Kyrgyzstan.  If you have allergies to any medication, be sure to write down the generic name rather than the brand name (i.e. "acetaminophen" or "paracetamol" as opposed to "Tylenol"); those with allergies to certain antibiotics are advised to bring their own.

The main pharmacy is called Apteka #240 and is located at 150 Sov'etskaya near the intersection with Moskovskaya St. OPEN MON-FRI 8AM TO 7PM: SAT-SUN 8AM-4PM
